How To track your Goals with GA4

In this tutorial, I will show you the easiest way to track the conversion of a thank-you page with Google Analytics 4.

If you are not using thank you pages on your website, you should. A thank-you page is a page that is displayed after an opt-in or purchase.

The use of thank-you pages will not only make your analytics easier but can also increase your income by giving you the opportunity to make another offer right after the first one.

How to track your thank you page conversion with GA4

In GA4 pretty much everything is an event. In order to track your conversion (or goals) we have first to create a custom event that will be triggered when the thank you page is viewed and then mark this event as a conversion.

Custom events can be created either with Google Tag Manager (GTM) or inside GA4. In this tutorial, we are going to use GA4 to avoid having to use an extra tool

Part 1: Create the custom event

Before starting, copy the URL of your thank you page.

Head to the configure section and select events.

Click on create event.

Give your event a meaningful name.

In the Matching conditions section for the Parameter field type ‘page_location’ for the Operator select ‘contains’ and the value enter the page URL without the domain. So if your page is www.mysite.com/my-first-thank-you-page enter ‘my-first-thank-you-page‘. In my example the thank-you-page was mysite/thank-you-lead-demo so I entered ‘thank-you-lead-demo‘ as Value.

To avoid problems the thank-you page URL should be as descriptive as possible. Don’t call your page thank-you because if you have another one called thank-you-for-buying the event ‘thank-you’ will get fired for both pages (since both pages contain ‘thank-you’).

If you want to assign a monetary value to your conversion under Parameter configuration click on Add modification.

For the first parameter select value. In the New value field enter the amount this conversion is worth to you 75 in this example.

Click Add modification to add a second row.

For the parameter select currency. As New Value enter the currency code you want to use. CAD in this case but it could be USD or EUR, etc.

Don’t forget to click on Create on the top right to save your goal!

Part 2: Create the Goal

Now that the event is created, creating the goal is straightforward. You simply need to create a goal with the same name you used for the event.

To do so click on New conversion event

Enter the name of the event you created in step 1 and click Save.

You’re done!

You should see the new custom event in the real-time report after a few minutes, but it will take up to 24 hours before the conversion will begin to show up in your report as we see below.
